Tenerife, Gran Canaria and La Gomera

After Lanzarote we head on to Tenerife where we meet Lucka and Micke who just arrived the day before and have a appartment close to Puerto de la Cruz.

So we leave our She San for the first time over night and go hiking with them in several places on the island. We find Tenerife a really great place to go hiking. The paths are in great condition and the nature is very divers but most of all very green.

The next day we chose the northeast end of Tenerife, the Anaga mountains, and even though it is raining in the beginning, the hike tuns out ot be one of the most beautiful hikes we ever did.

Then we decide to take a day “a hiking break” and stroll through the city. Afterwards we all find that it was the most exhausting of our walks…

so we go hiking again in the far west of Tenerife, and again it is awesome..

Then Reto and I head on to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, since there are still a lot of to do’s before we continue to Cabo Verde and on further westwards.

But next to all that work – which is of course also most of the times a lot of fun-  we also sometimes take our time to enjoy where we are ;-),

so we check out the beach and the “night life” in the streets of Las Palmas
and we go biking around the island, which is very mountainous and has thousands of valleys, the so called barrancos

Then we feel ready to go, but the wind has a different opinion. Due to the depressions in the north the local winds since two weeks rather come from South/Southeast instead of North/Northeast, so we see that it doesn’t make any sense to go south to Cabo Verde yet.

No problem, let’s go to La Gomera, anyway we always wanted to see that mountainous island in the West of Tenerife, and also we wanted to make a testrun of our watermaker and to test the repaired sails.

So after a short period of struggling with diverse commissioning problems we are happy that everything runs well, and soon we taste our first de-salinated water 😉 .

In addition to water making we catch a small bonito (that’s already nothing special anymore, but we still are very happy ;-), and I say to Reto, “we need to eat it raw, otherwise it is gone after one meal. And then the next morning just before the entrance to La Gomera we catch his father, now this one is really enough again for the next days, and we still had half of the small one left over..

And because we liked it so much we go back hiking – we really enjoy the senderos, hiking paths and the most stunning views!

also we find the first real latin music party and enjoy dancing the merengues and salsas with the local band making good groovy sound.

Also we are very much impressed by the rowers preparing to go 3000 miles over to Antigua, and we cannot imagine, how it is in such small boats.

I promiss to Reto that I should never complain on our confortable catamaran or otherwise he should remind me of the rowers in their tiny boats, who in addition have to row and sleep within view meters of boat only.

Now the wind has changed, tomorrow also the waves are supposed to calm down (thanks to Petra and Ben from the Netherlands we didn’t go today, when the waves still were pretty high, influenced by the depressions in the north), so we plan to start  tomorrow Monday to Cabo Verde, straight way 760 miles, so if everything goes well in 6 or 7 days we should be there.

We want to wish you all a merry and peaceful Christmas time!

  1. Hola.
